BYU guard Gibb cites faith for skipping Sunday practice before WBIT win
BYU Cougars guard Delaney Gibb explained that her team skipped practice on Sunday for religious reasons ahead of a 70-67 victory over Kansas in the Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament. The win came after the Cougars finished 26-12 during the regular season under coach Lee Cummard but missed the NCAA Tournament. Gibb, who scored 12 points in the game, said the decision reflects the team's culture and faith.
"When you look at it from a perspective of our team and our culture we’ve built and the faith that we have it’s a day that we get to have a different perspective on life," Gibb said via the school's website. "There’s things that are bigger than basketball and Jesus Christ and having faith in Him is something that’s bigger than basketball." BYU, affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, maintains a policy against athletic practices and competitions on Sundays to observe the Sabbath.
Sydney Benally scored 15 points in the Kansas game. Gibb averaged a team-high 18.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game during the 2025-26 season. She earned All-Big 12 first-team honors after being named the 2025 Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
The Cougars fell to Columbia in their next WBIT game on Wednesday.
