New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith led the NFL with 21 interceptions during his rookie season in 2013, a turbulent year for the franchise that finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs.[1][2]

Smith, selected 39th overall in the 2013 NFL Draft, started 13 games and threw for 2,039 yards and 12 touchdowns alongside the league-high turnovers.[1]

In 2014, he improved his touchdown-to-interception ratio, recording 13 of each in 13 starts.[1] The Jets went 6-10 that season.

Smith's Jets tenure was further disrupted in 2015 when he suffered a broken jaw in a locker room altercation with linebacker IK Enemkpali on August 11, sidelining him for nine games.[3][4]

The Jets have not reached the NFL playoffs since the 2010 season, marking the longest active postseason drought in the league.[2][5]

After departing New York following the 2016 season, Smith signed with the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2019 campaign. He earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections in 2022 and 2023.[1][6]

The Seahawks missed the playoffs with a 9-8 record in 2023. Smith remains their starting quarterback in the 2024 season.[1]

The Jets recorded a 7-10 mark in 2023 and fired head coach Robert Saleh on October 31, 2024, with defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich named interim coach.[7][8]
