Mark Cuban joined Robert Morris University's 2026 Sport Management Summit on Friday, October 16, delivering a virtual keynote that drew students, alumni, and industry professionals to the UPMC Events Center. The entrepreneur and longtime NBA franchise figure used the session to reflect on his career across technology, media, and sports ownership. The event doubled as a milestone celebration, marking 50 years since RMU launched its Sport Management program.

A Program Built on a Pioneering Model

Founded in 1976, RMU's Sport Management program was the first in the United States to be housed within a school of business, a structural choice that shaped how the university approached the discipline from the outset. Rather than treating sport management as a standalone field, RMU built its curriculum around core business principles, sports analytics, and direct engagement with industry professionals. That model has underpinned the program for five decades, and the 2026 Summit was designed to honor it while pointing toward what comes next.

Cuban on AI and the Future of Sports Executives

During his Q&A, the Pittsburgh native focused heavily on artificial intelligence and its growing role in sports business. Cuban drew a sharp distinction between two approaches to the technology. "There are two types of people who use AI: The people who use it so they don't have to know anything, and the people who use it so they can learn everything," he said. He cautioned that AI remains a tool rather than a substitute for judgment, adding that professionals need the expertise to evaluate its output critically rather than accept it at face value. For students preparing to enter front offices, marketing departments, or media operations, the message centered on adaptability paired with genuine competence.

Panels Tackle AI, Production, and Soccer's Rise

Beyond Cuban's appearance, the Summit featured sessions on artificial intelligence in front-office decision-making, live event production, and sponsorship activation, reflecting how quickly those areas are reshaping front-office work across leagues. A dedicated panel titled "Soccer Boom" examined the sport's commercial surge in the United States ahead of major international tournaments set to take place in North America. Panelists included Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Riveters SC president Jeff Garner, USL Championship president Jeremy Alumbaugh, IK Start USA chairman Roger Loughney, and Scott Gibson of the Riveters and Riverhounds organizations. Their discussion addressed how domestic leagues are positioning themselves commercially as interest in the sport continues to climb.

Looking Toward the Next 50 Years

Rockwell School of Business Dean Daria Crawley framed the anniversary as recognition of sustained achievement rather than a single moment. "The Sport Management program at RMU's Rockwell School of Business has built an extraordinary legacy and relationships within our community," she said, pointing to decades of student outcomes and faculty contributions. Program director Armand Buzzelli echoed that sentiment while looking ahead, noting that the sports industry will keep evolving but that RMU's approach - hands-on experience and direct access to industry leaders - will remain constant. For a program that helped define the field half a century ago, the Summit served as both a retrospective and a signal of intent for what comes next.
